is the Greatest Common Factor (GCF)

Definition

The factors common to a group of numbers are called common factors. A group of numbers might have more than one common factor.

The greatest factor common to a group of numbers is called the greatest common factor (GCF).

Follow these simple steps to find the GCF of two or three numbers:

Step 1: For each number, make a list of all of its factors.

Step 2: Identify the common factors.

Step 3: Find the greatest common factor.

Example

Let's find the GCF of 48 and 72. We will follow the above steps.

Step 1: For each number, make a list of all of its factors.

The factors of 48 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 48
The factors of 72 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 72

Step 2: Identify the common factors.

The factors common to 48 and 72 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24

Step 3: Find the greatest common factor.

From the previous list of common factors, we will choose the greatest number: 24

Answer: GCF = 24
